Honda Unveils Machine that Helps People Walk

Posted in health, technology on November 13th, 2008

The Honda Motor Company has divisions all across the world. They manufacture motorcycles, cars, trucks, jets, ATVs, and many other products. In a recent press release, Honda announced that they have a new robotic device that could make it easier for seniors to use the stairs.

Honda’s line of automobiles is well known and respected for its high level of quality and dependability. Today, they are the fifth largest manufacturer of automobiles in the World. In addition to manufacturing many types of transportation vehicles, Honda also has a very successful division that develops human like robots.

Honda’s new mobility device is being developed by their robotic department. It is based in part on what they have learned by the ASIMO robot. ASIMO stands for Advanced Step in Innovating Mobility and is a robot that looks much like an astronaut. It stands about four feet high and is capable of completing many tasks, including interacting with humans, the environment, and climbing the stairs.

The stairs present a very dangerous place for a senior. This area of the home can be very dangerous and falls on the stairs are one of the most common injuries among those that are over sixty. As a result, there are several mobility devices that are available for the home and designed to make the stairs safer. This includes devices like the stair lift, which carries someone up the stairs.

Honda’s most recent robotic device is meant to, among other things, help make using the stairs safer. This machine is basically like having an extra set of legs. The user places their feet into a special set of shoes. A set of bendable legs extend from the shoes about half way up the body. There is a small bicycle like seat at the top of the legs. This device is used similarly to an unicycle, but rather than rolling around, Honda’s machine helps the user to pick their feet up off of the ground. This device helps to walk for the user, by reducing the amount of energy required to lift ones legs

This device has applications to rehabilitation, senior heath, and could also be used by factory workers. While it is still very much in the experimental stage, the potential uses of this product are very exciting.
