High-Tech Upgrades for Power Wheelchairs
I happened upon a very unique retail site today. The site is www.broadenedhorizons.com and they sell products that greatly enhance the quality of life for individuals who are confined to an electric wheelchair. Actually, their product offering targets an even more specific segment: those who are paralyzed and use only their voice to interact with their environment.
It wasn’t just the idea of power wheelchair accessories that attracted me to this site; it was the high-tech products that are offered. The site offers some great gadgets that would be desirable for anyone, like a voice-controlled universal remote system or a cell phone that is completely voice-controlled. They also sell voice-command software for computers and a laptop mount so you can hook a computer up to the electric wheelchair. They even sell modified videogame controllers that require less dexterity in the hands. Products like these allow their customers to enjoy things they otherwise could not.
I was attracted to the site because I’m a technically-inclined individual myself, and I love the idea that the disabled can be just as high-tech as any of us. On top of that, I think the president’s story is an inspiring one. The president of the company, Mark Felling, has been paralyzed from the armpits down since a plane crash in 2003. Certainly his love of technology has led him to this career path, and I sincerely hope his site continues to do well.
