Sixty is Only the Beginning
Today, more than ten percent of all baby boomers are over the age of sixty, which is the age that has commonly been used to define an individual as being elderly. Increasingly, those baby boomers over the age of sixty are realizing that they are far from elderly and that sixty is only the beginning. They are quickly realizing that their body is still strong and very capable.
Many of those that are over the age of sixty are also still working, not necessarily because they have to work, but often because they enjoy working. As a result, they are free from much of the stress that can be associated with being in the work force. Those that are retired are able to spend time with their family and have found out how rewarding participating in community activities, such as book clubs, can be.
While advances in medical technology have in large part been responsible for the increase in life expectancy, people have also begun eating better and exercising regularly. A recent study by the University of Melbourne in Australia has shown that walking about two hours every week can actually increase your cognitive capabilities, which helps to prove the age old adage that a healthy body brings a healthy mind.
As the life expectancy increases, so does the definition of ‘elderly’ and many over sixty have realized that they are in the prime of their lives.
Advances in medical technology and healthier living continue to increase life expectancy, so many are finding out that sixty is far from elderly. They are learning that life is just beginning and there are few places that their body can not take them.
